Jack Rose, 1971-2009

Pelt guitarist and American Primitive master Jack Rose has died of a heart attack, at the age of just 38.

What can I say… Jack was a fantastic picker and a big inspiration, for me and many others. I just played a show with him in late September, and you can see videos from Jack’s performance here.

Lac La Belle Release Debut CD… This Weekend!

Well, the title of the post and the above image pretty much say it all… if you’re in the Detroit area, don’t miss these shows! These three fine players, formerly known as Jennie & The Sure Shots, were in Pittsburgh just a couple of weeks ago, and I was able to get this video of their song “Leave That Country”.

That’s the amazing Nick Schillace back there on the resonator guitar! If you’re a fan of solo acoustic guitar, I can also highly recommend Nick’s two solo albums : Box Canyon and Landscape and People.

New videos from Ton van Bergeijk!

Fans of Kicking Mule Records and ragtime guitar will probably remember the name Ton van Bergeijk. The young Dutch picker was discovered by Stefan Grossman in the 70’s, and went on to record several awe-inspiring ragtime albums. Ton has since played in a number of Dutch big bands and hot jazz bands, including The Boulevard Of Broken Dreams, The Gangbusters and The Dutch Swing College Band.

Ton now has a video page over at Daily Motion, and has a number of fun guitar and ukelele videos on display. One of my favorites is “Ecky Thumb Drum”, linked below… check out the move at 00:09!

There are a couple of very informative posts about Ton over at the Keep Swinging blog.

Bert Jansch mid 70’s albums reissued by Drag City

I’ll kick this blog off with some great news, though I’m certainly not the first to break it…  the amazing Bert Jansch, a songwriter and guitar player of the highest order, and something of a living legend, is having three of his mid 70’s albums reissued by Drag City. The albums in question? L.A. Turnaround, Santa Barbara Honeymoon, and A Rare Conundrum.

Of the three albums in question, at least one is an absolute classic, L.A. Turnaround. It was produced by the inimitable Michael Nesmith (yup, that Michael Nesmith!) and also features the amazing pedal steel of Red Rhodes, who absolutely tore it up on those Nesmith solo albums from the early 70’s. Bert’s playing and singing are wonderful, and the accompaniment is understated and quite lovely. It also features one of my all-time favorite Bert songs, “One For Jo”.

The CDs are available now, and the vinyl is coming in October. Look for some in-depth reviews when the vinyl drops!
